So were about half way through day two and deals are still being done all over the NFL. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the big spenders so far and the Washington Redskins have signed a whole new set of receivers in anticipation of picking Quarterback Robert Griffin III in the upcoming draft. Here is a run down of what's happened so far.
Reggie Wayne signed a new contract in Indianapolis. people thought he would end up wherever Manning went but it seems like he wants to help Andrew Luck when the Colts pick him with the number 1 overall in the Draft. It's a great signing for Indy as Reggie is still one of the top receivers in the NFL
Robert Meachem who looked likely to be going to Buffalo last night made a U turn in his Jet and signed with the San Diego Chargers. Meachem is a top receiver and with the Chargers losing Vincent Jackson to free agency there hoping Meachem can fill the gap.
Vincent Jackson has signed with the big spending Tampa Bay Buccs. The Buccaneers had $45 million worth of salary cap room to play with at the start of free agency and have started to spend it. They have also Signed the top Offensive Lineman available from free agency in Carl Nicks formerly of the New Orleans saints, and Corner back Eric Wright from Detroit. Three big moves to bolster Tampa's chances of moving up the rankings in there division as all three will move straight in to the starting line up.
Cortland Finnegan one of the best C ehik uporners available has signed with the St Louis Rams. he was by far Tennessee's best corner last year and will make a big impact on the Rams defence straight away. with better coverage on the out side it gives Pass rushers Chris Long and Robert Quinn a few seconds longer to get to the QB
Another top Corner in free agency was Carlos Rodgers of the San Francisco 49ers. He resigned with them today showing the 49ers are willing to put some money in to keeping hold of their best players in order to push for a play off spot again this year. The only person left to snatch up is QB Alex Smith who had a good year last year and is likely to stay in San Fran
Two free agent QB's have signed to new teams. Jason Campbell who was pushed out of Oakland when they signed Carlson Palmer last season is now a back up in Chicago behind Jay Cutler, and Kyle Orton has signed a contract wit the Dallas Cowboys to be the back behind Tony Romo. Both QB's are only likely to start games if the number ones get injured during the season.
As mentioned at the start the Washington Redskins have gone out and signed two New Wide Receivers in Pierre Garçon and Josh Morgan. Both players were starters at there old teams and will fit straight into the starting line up at Washington as well as adding depth at that position. Its been a clear strategy that once the Redskins had acquired the 2nd pick in this years draft in a trade with the Rams to get Robert Griffin III (RG3) they have now gone out to get him some weapons on offence to throw to. they are also in the pursuit of Eddie Royal, another Wide receiver previously at Denver.
Calvin Johnson aka Megatron has signed a new megabucks contract to stay in Detroit till 2019. it is worth a massive $132million over 8 years with a guaranteed $60million. It's a lot of money but its definitely worth it. Megatron is the best WR in the NFL. He had 1,681 receiving yards last year and 16 Touchdowns. With Matthew Stafford throwing him the ball he will only continue to torment NFL defenders in years to come. There are still some big names in Free Agency available. Mario Williams looks likely to join the Buffalo Bills but he is still visiting other franchises to keep his options open. Peyton Manning is visiting Tennessee today and that is probably his last stop on his tour of franchises so a deal should be done soon with one of the teams. At the head of the chase is probably Miami. Running back Michael Bush is heading to Cincinnati for a visit as they are in desperate need of a franchise running back so a deal might be done there this week, but he is also visiting Chicago as Matt Forte may hold out from playing in an attempt to get a new contract from the bears.
Dwight Freeney maybe the next Veteran player out the door as the Colts continue to completely rebuild there franchise. Indianapolis signed ex Raven Defensive End Cory Redding. The New Head coach at Indy is Chuck Pagano who previously was in charge of the defence in Baltimore. Don't be surprised to see a few more Baltimore players sign for Indy before the season starts.
I hope I managed to cover most of what's gone on the last 24 hours, and if you would like me to give you an update on your team just leave a comment below and I'll do my best in tomorrow's post.
